Conference
2006
|
|
Chad J. Rye, President
|
| WOW! A year has almost gone by since I wrote my last
message. I have been honored to be your President. Before my final farewell
address, there are still more things we need to accomplish. The 2006 ISRC
Confluence Conference is September 14th and 15th here in Lewiston, Idaho.
The conference is going to be held at the Williams Conference Center on
the campus of Lewis and Clark State College. The speakers this year should
be very good. Talks on the bird flu, ventilator management, medication
management and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, just to name a few, are scheduled.
The official brochure should be out by the time you get this newsletter.
We are planning a vendor reception to be held at one of the favorite watering
holes Thursday night. It should be a great conference. Hope to see you
there. |
| I also want to encourage those who are NOT AARC members
to join. The AARC does so many things to help keep the profession of Respiratory
Care visible and voicestrous. Without them, there may be no us. |

Disaster
Team Volunteers Needed
|
|
Lande Lambert, Disaster
Guy
|
| ISRC is still working to develop a database of volunteers--Idaho
RTs willing to go on record as willing to help in the event of an emergency.
There is already a form to fill out on our web site. Just go to disaster_response_application_form.html.
In
addition, it would be helpful if anyone that is or has participated in
any emergency preparedness programs to let me know about these activities...what
is you facility or community doing to prepare and what capacity you are
involved. This information is kept by the President of ISRC. Please e-mail
any information to me at landel@mvrmc.org. |

ISRC
Logo
|
|
Tom Gable
|
| Toward the end of last year, the Board of Directors addressed
the problem of the loss of the original of the ISRC logo, first created
by Jenny Brockett of Boise. Existing copies had lost much of the definition
and detail of the original. One possible solution was a contest to design
a new logo. That concept was presented in a previous edition of this newsletter.
There was only one respondent to that solicitation, Mark Wood of Boise.
Mark submitted several rough sketch concepts for a new logo. If one were
selected, he would then prepare a finished design. The Board considered
those suggested new designs at a recent meeting. At that time, the Board
also considered the existing logo. After discussion, it was decided to
retain the current logo and have it redrawn by Jenny Brockett and then
to have it digitized by a graphic artist. The newly clarified design
is on the masthead of this edition. Thank you to Jenny Brockett, Leslie
Erfurth for the computer work and Mark Wood for his suggestions. |

Idaho
State University
Respiratory Therapy Program
|
|
Stephen Swope
|
| Early in 2003, Idaho State University
(ISU) representatives met with members of the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical
Center in Idaho Falls, Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls,
and Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello to discuss the needs for Respiratory
Therapy Personnel in eastern Idaho. From these meetings it was determined
that there was a need for therapists in this region and the hospitals supported
the concept of a Respiratory Therapy Program at ISU to help fill the void
of therapists in the area. Late in the summer of 2003, approval was given
to move forward with the plans for a Respiratory Therapy Program. |
| In 2004, paperwork was drafted
and discussions were held with the Idaho State Board of Education and within
the state system to gain approval to develop a respiratory therapy program
at ISU. In January of 2005, a letter with the ISU Notice of Intent (NOI)
to establish a Respiratory Therapy Program on the Pocatello campus was
submitted to the state board of education. In May of 2005, a program
director, Steve Swope, RRT, was hired to initiate the accreditation process. |
| In August of 2005, the Committee
on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) gave the program a Letter
of Review and the first class was officially admitted to the program. Currently
there are 8 students enrolled in the program and 9 students have been accepted
for class beginning in August of 2006. |
| The Respiratory Therapy Program
is located in the College of Technology at ISU and grants an associate
of science degree. It is an advanced level (registry) program. The main
clinical affiliates of the program are Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center
in Idaho Falls, Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls, and
Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello. Program Director is Stephen (Steve)
Swope, BA, RRT, Acting Director of Clinical Education is Nikkie Stephens,
BS, RRT, and co-Medical Directors are David L. Shrader, MD, (Idaho Falls),
Robert Lobb, Jr., MD, (Twin Falls) and Steven Krawtz, MD (Pocatello). More
information about the program is available at www.isu.edu
or by contacting Steve at 208-282-3653. |

Further
Thoughts on the ISU RT Program
|
|
Carrie Massie
|
| As an instructor of this new program I was cautious and
excited at the same time to be involved in the creation and molding of
a new Respiratory Program. It has been challenging learning how to
coordinate between the different facilities teaching approaches and to
provide the same instruction at 3 different facility sites. The students
have classroom time with the Program Director, Steve Swope, and then the
students are broken into groups based on the city in which they reside,
to attend a laboratory setting and clinical site for "hands on" teaching
at the participating facility. |
| All instructors are given the same outline of what is
to be taught each week and all students have procedures that need to be
witnessed and signed off by a Licensed Respiratory Therapist. Here
at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center they perform all of their clinical
rotations with the Clinical Educator to allow for a structured learning
program. The students I have had the opportunity to work with are
exceptional; they are progressing with a strong knowledge base of current
Respiratory Therapy and are able to demonstrate valuable critical thinking
skills. I am very pleased with the program and can only imagine how
much stronger it will be in later years. |
