Annual Conference and Convention
September 8-9
Tom Gable
The ISRC annual meeting is scheduled at the DoubleTree Hotel Riverside in Boise. There will be lectures, exhibits and social events on Thursday, September 8 and Friday, September 9.  The general theme for the educational component is the expanding role for respiratory care with emphasis on diversification. The keynote speaker will be Edwin Dahlberg, CEO of St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. Other featured speakers include Tom Ahrens, RN, Mark Siobal, RRT, Wendi Norris, MD and James Sousa, MD. There will be 12 contact hours of available CEUs.
On Thursday evening, our vendors will sponsor a participant reception with goodies and fellowship. The social highlight will be a group trip to Boise's Shakespeare Festival on Friday evening. The offering that night is “The Complete Works of Shakespeare” (this sounds comprehensive). During the lunch break, both days, you will be entertained by a friendly Sputum Bowl competition (see below).
Make your plans to attend. Registration information will be available soon on the ISRC website http://www.idasrc.org.  The conference committee is co-chaired by our Vice President, Lynda Erfurth and Randy Evaro. They are both at St. Luke's RMC (208-381-2155).

In Memoriam
Herald Van Winkle
Our fellow member, Herald (“Bub”), of Nampa, passed away May 22. Bub leaves his wife Thelma of 34 years and four sons, Daniel, Joseph, Jason and Nathan and their families. Bub practiced his respiratory care at Gem Home Medical in Emmett for the last 12 years. He served as a U.S. Marine in Viet Nam. The passion of his life was his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on which he toured as often as possible. Ironically, Bub was afflicted with pulmonary fibrosis, a disorder he surely treated and supported in many patients over the years.  He passed at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle while awaiting a double lung transplant. The Society extends its deepest sympathy to Thelma Van Winkle and all her family.
Call for Sputum Bowl Teams
Tom Gable
We have not had a state Sputum Bowl competition for many years. Our conference organizers, Lynda Erfurth and Randy Evaro want to resurrect the state “Bowl”. What we need is at least 3 teams. Three person teams can be from hospitals, businesses or just a group of friends. If I can get a commitment from 3 teams by August 1, I will prepare questions for the competition, which is scheduled for the lunch hours on September 8 and 9 during our Annual Conference and Convention in Boise. Please consider forming a team and having some fun. I have been doing the question asking at Sputum Bowls for many years (mostly for the Oregon Society) and focus on writing and asking easy questions. The game is all about having fun. You don’t have to study for it. Come on. Lets get it going again. Let me know by August 1. (phone 208-381-2153, FAX, e-mail info on newsletter back page)

Idaho's Disaster Response Team
Lande Lambert
The July issue of AARC Times has a good article about RTs volunteering for emergency services. It was good to see a government agency like Health and Human Services recognize RTs as the professionals they are. AARC and ISRC have responded to this issue. If you are willing to volunteer to be on a call list for emergencies that arise in Idaho, then fill out the application on the ISRC web site at http://www.idasrc.org/disaster_response_application_form.html. You can make a note on the application whether you want this to be kept for Idaho or open to the AARC. These forms will be kept by the ISRC President. Remember all those time your department was short staffed and the work load was high? Now add a major emergency to that. Wouldn't it be nice to have a list available for the director to call up for help. This will not obligate you to anything.
Now, for the more adventurous RTs there is Disaster Medical Assistance Team--DMAT. This is part of Homeland Security. I received a call the other day from the Director of the Western Sector of DMAT (Pam is threatening to hide my phone), and he wants to restart the Idaho DMAT. I am waiting for the call back to get this going (if I can find my phone). With DMAT you may be asked to respond to emergencies anywhere. You will need a passport and all sorts of immunizations. You do sign the same type of paper work as when you join the military. These teams are made up of physicians, nurses, paramedics, and RTs.
If you are interested in either of these opportunities to volunteer your skills, please contact me at:

Camp Super Breathers
Tom Gable
This year's Camp Super Breathers will take place at Sawtooth Methodist Camp from August 8 to 12.  The camp is for kids with asthma ages 8 to 13. The 2005 theme is “Harry Potter”.  One of the planned highlights is the inclusion of a gifted harmonica player, who will be in residence for the entire camp. He and his wife will teach kids how to manage their breathing by playing the harmonica. The camp is sponsored by the American Lung Association and St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. There are a few openings for counselors. If interested call Kera Yost at ALA (208-345-5864) or Michele Andrew at St. Al's Cardiopulmonary Rehab (208-367-3199). Most importantly, the camp needs kids.  The ISRC and the ALA have scholarships available. Get details from Kera or Michele. The Sawtooth Methodist Camp is about 35 miles from Fairfield on the upper reaches of the South Fork of the Boise River, a beautiful, relatively remote, setting.
There are also three one-day asthma camps this year in Idaho Falls, Boise and Lewiston. The Idaho Falls camp is passed, but the Boise camp is July 7 and Lewiston is August 4. Camper cost is $25 and includes a day of crafts, asthma education, lunch and lots of fun. Contact Kera for specifics.

New Lung Simulator
Tom Gable
The students and faculty of the Respiratory Care Program at Boise State University are excited by the newest addition to their research laboratory, the Hans Rudolph Series 1101 Breathing Simulator. Lonny Ashworth, Respiratory Care Program Director wanted to acquire one of the unique new tools since they recently became available.  He proposed to borrow the $10,000 purchase price from BSU's Nursing Program. That request was initially accepted, but a short time later, the leadership of the Nursing Program changed the loan to a grant. Their rationale was that the research efforts of the University, as a whole, would benefit from this acquisition.
The Series 1101 Breathing Simulator is a bellows system that utilizes a mathematical lung model to simulate spontaneous breathing. Lung parameters of resistance, compliance, breathing rate and patient effort can be adjusted to simulate a variety of patient conditions. By setting the patient effort at zero, a passive or paralyzed patient can also be simulated.
For the last several years the students in this program have had an emphasis on research projects, many of which deal with mechanical ventilation. Lonny feels the addition of the spontaneous breathing simulator will greatly enhance the design and performance of many of the envisioned research projects his students are involved with. Some of the immediate projects involve: 1. Evaluation of the LTV 100 and Newport HT 50 transport ventilators to define the accuracy of the ventilators’ onboard measurements; 2. Measuring the expiratory resistance on the Servo and the updated Viasys Avea; 3. Evaluation of automatic tube compensation (ATC) in neonatal ventilators and tubes; 4. Assessing the accuracy of internal measurements on auto-titrating CPAP generators for sleep apnea.
